SpringSource buys Hyperic, seeyalater

May 4th, 2009 Alex Bewley

Today, SpringSource announced they acquired Hyperic, an open source systems management vendor.  If you have 451 Group access, you can read a nice summary here.  Ultimately, these kinds of acquisitions are of interest to us, because it means that players are slowly being removed from the system’s management space.  This acquisition in particular is going to refocus Hyperic in the marketplace by becoming part of a specific SpringSource solution, which is a slightly different mandate than what they have been pursuing in the past.

Additionally, Hyperic has been ‘cloud’ focused for the past half year and SpringSource cites this as a benefit.  I still have misgivings on ‘cloud’ (see my post on this).  I hardly consider monitoring EC2 instances being ‘cloud enabled.’  Which Fortune 500 company in their right mind is going to stick any production services into Amazon’s EC2 cloud?

Anyway, I wish them all the best and I hope the VCs of Hyperic’s series A and B got their money out.
